Capture 365 Journal



This is the fourth in a series of posts regarding the retention, protection, deletion and auditing of email data in Office 365. In this post we will look at journaling in Exchange Online under Office 365. The configuration of Journal rules can be made under the Compliance Management area within the Exchange admin center in Office 365. The body of a journal report contains information from the original message such as the sender email address, message subject, message-ID, and recipient email addresses. This is also referred to as envelope journaling, and is the only journaling method supported by Microsoft 365 and Office 365. Journal reports and IRM-protected messages. Hybrid Deployment. In a Hybrid deployment, where some mailboxes are on-premise Exchange Server and some Office 365 Exchange Online, you must set up a journaling rule on both the on-premise Exchange Server and Office 365 to capture inbound, outbound, and internal mail. In AX2012 it was possible to capture screenshots in Task Recorder and use it for e.g. configuration documentation. This functionality is not available when you use Internet Explorer or Edge.


In Dynamics 365 for Operations Help Wiki, Microsoft suggest that you add an Extension to Google Chrome and thereby revives the AX2012 Task Recorder functionality:

Download and add the extension to Google Chrome

Before you can add the extension to Google Chrome you must download it. The zip file that contain the extension can be downloaded from:


Select Download and Download Zip.

Unzip the file and save it in a folder.

Select Customize and control Google Chrome > More tools > Extensions

Select ”Developer mode” and ”load unpacked extensions”

Browse the folder, select ”TaskRecorderSchreenshot” folder and press OK.

The extension is now added. Make sure that “Enabled” is selected.

Restart Google Chrome. When Google Chrome opens again “Disable developer mode extensions” opens. Select “Cancel” if you want to use the Task Recorder screenshot extension.


Create a Task recording

Select Task recorder under the Settings

Select “+ Create recording”.

Type a Recording name and additionally a Recording description. Below a screen dump is inserted from a Google Chrome browser and an Internet Explorer / Edge browser


In a Google Chrome browser, you can select “Capture screenshots” under Recording options. Select Yes to Capture screenshots.

If you are using an Internet Explorer or an Edge browser the “Capture screenshots” under Recording options is not available.

Record the relevant screenshots and Stop the recording when you are finished.

Select ”Export as Word document” and save the document.

The document contains the screenshots you have recorded. :-)

Before you start your recording consider how you get the best screenshots by using zoom or do not open Dynamics 365 for Operations in full screen.
